Department of Cardiology

Department of Cardiology at University Hospital Leipzig provides care for patients with congenital, acquired and chronic heart diseases. The department is a certified heart center where the entire spectrum of heart diseases is diagnosed and treated by the state-of-the-art diagnostics and therapeutics. The department has the main focus directed towards interventional cardiology, heart failure therapy, cardiac arrhythmia, and cardiovascular disease prevention. The Coronary Care Unit of the department works in close cooperation with the Intensive Care Unit where cardiovascular patients are monitored and treated. The unit offers ECMO and Impella therapy as supportive measures for cardiac insufficiency.
Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. med. Ulrich Laufs, the department treats over 2,800 inpatients every year. The department also has a certified Chest Pain unit which is fully equipped with cutting-edge diagnostics and therapeutics as well as the medical team and nursing staff who are specialized in handling emergencies, It also has a specialized unit for the treatment of arrhythmia in the form of pacemakers and defibrillators implantation. The department offers the full spectrum of implantation therapy, ranging from compartment devices to chamber devices.
