Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Infectiology at University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf provides the medical care for patients with gastrointestinal, liver and biliary system diseases as well as infectious diseases. The department is in close cooperation with the departments of Interdisciplinary Endoscopy, Hepatobiliary and Transplantation Surgery, General Surgery and Radiology. The department is well-known for its liver transplantation surgeries as well as the treatment of significant infectious diseases, as it works together with the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Ansgar W. Lohse, the department treats more than 8,800 inpatients every year. The outpatient clinic for hepatitis of the department is considered as the largest one in Germany and the one for autoimmune liver diseases is the only one in Germany. The department also has the first center for liver elasticity measurement in all of northern Germany.
