Department of Cardiology, Angiology, Pulmonology, Infectiology, and Intensive Care Medicine at University Hospital Greifswald is mainly concerned with is the treatment of coronary heart diseases, heart failure, high blood pressure, and cardiac arrhythmias, in terms of patient care and research activities. The medical staff purses an interdisciplinary approach for the treatment of about 5,000 inpatients every year through the close cooperation with the Departments of Dermatology, Internal Medicine A, General, Visceral, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, Neurology as well as the Diagnostic Radiology and Neuroradiology.
The facility has a specialized ward for rheumatological diseases affecting the heart and two modern catheter laboratories for interventional therapy of vascular diseases. Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Stephan Felix, the ECMO Center has gained the Award of Excellence by the international Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO). The Weaning Center, specialized in weaning from artificial ventilation, gained the certification of the German Society for Pneumology and Respiratory Medicine for its efforts and results.
