Department of Nephrology

Department of Nephrology at University Hospital Essen provides care for patients with kidney disorders, including renal-induced hypertension and autoimmune diseases. The department has a special focus directed towards kidney transplantation as well as combined transplantations of the kidney and pancreas. With the use of state-of-the-art equipment by 18 skillful qualified doctors and 56 members of the medical staff, the department performs nearly 3,500 intermittent hemodialyses and 350 continuous hemodialyses every year. 
Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. med. Andreas Kribben, more than 1,000 inpatients and 8,500 outpatients get treated in this department every year. The research activities the department carries out has nothing but success and pioneering in their history. Current researches are about acute and chronic kidney failure, cystic kidney disease, dialysis, and kidney transplantation. The department successfully performs about 200 kidney transplantation surgeries, more than 30 of which are liver-kidney transplants.
