The University Hospital Düsseldorf’s Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy is responsible for healthcare for the inhabitants of the city of Düsseldorf (with the exception of the northern parts of the city) as well as for the district of Mettmann. They also and undertake far-reaching research tasks.
The Department works closely together with Heinrich Heine University and has an "early detection center for those with increased risk of mental illness" which provides differentiated diagnostics, offers advice and evaluates innovative treatment options in mental health. The Center for Neurology and Neuropsychiatry also specializes in the acute care of stroke, epilepsy and neurodegenerative diseases as well as the treatment of neuropsychiatric conditions in close cooperation with other departments in the University Hospital Düsseldorf.
The staff of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy also work in numerous work and research groups to further improve psychiatric-psychotherapeutic treatment procedures. Intensive research, innovative therapies are applied in the clinic at an early stage and the therapist teams are trained accordingly, for example, to apply psychotherapeutic settings in the care of patients suffering from schizophrenia.
The department has about 639 inpatient beds, 144 in multiple daycare clinics and a variety of outpatient clinics. The hospital is certified according to KTQ and EMAS, as well as continuing medical education in the psychiatry department according to the guidelines of the European Association of Specialists (UEMS). Further professional qualifications are provided by the clinic's own Institute for Clinical Behavior Therapy and a nursing school.
In 2014, the LVR-Klinikum Düsseldorf was awarded the status of a WHO Collaborating Center for Quality Assurance and Empowerment in Mental Health as one of the best specialist departments for psychiatry and psychotherapy in Germany.
