Department of Neurosurgery

According to the diverse spectrum of neurosurgical diseases, the various diseases of the nervous system at the department are managed by specialized and competent medical teams. Using state-of-the-art, technologically assisted surgical procedures, the department treats diseases in the fields of vascular neurosurgery, tumor neurosurgery, cranial and pituitary surgery, spinal surgery, functional neurosurgery (movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease), pediatric neurosurgery and peripheral nerve surgery as well as chronic pain conditions. They also perform procedures like vertebroplasty.

To ensure the best possible treatment for borderline diseases, there is a close collaboration with other departments and institutes such as Neuroradiology, Neurology, the Radiation Clinic, and the Gamma Knife Center Krefeld, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic, the ENT Clinic and the Children's Hospital.

Neurosurgeons trained in the neurovascular field treat various diseases of the brain and spinal cord vessels. They do not just use surgical therapy. Rather, there is close cooperation with colleagues in neuroradiology, which brings catheter techniques in the treatment, as well as a close collaboration with the Department of Radiotherapy. They have technology which allows high-precision irradiation of small tumors and vascular malformations in the head. The possibility of combined use of surgery, catheter technology, and point irradiation allows individually optimized treatment plans to be developed for all patients.

Pediatric neurosurgery covers the entire spectrum of neurosurgical operations for children including surgery of tumors of the pituitary gland in children.

The cornerstone of neurosurgery in Düsseldorf was laid in 1947. Today, the Neurosurgical Clinic of the University Hospital Düsseldorf treats around 3000 patients annually. More than 15,000 outpatients are examined and cared for every year. The department is also one of the go-to centers by hospitals all over Germany for second opinions on the treatment of patients.

The Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Düsseldorf is specialized in:

  • Care of patients with an implanted device for electrical stimulation of specific brain areas (neurostimulator)
  • Electrical arousal of certain brain regions for the treatment of pain and movement disorders - so-called "Functional Neurosurgery"
  • Determination of the cause of unclear brain damage by means of computer and radiographically controlled tissue removal
  • Operations on the nervous system of children
  • Operations on the external (peripheral) nerves
  • Surgery on the spine
  • Surgery for injuries caused by wear and tear of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine
  • Surgery for persistent pain disorders, such as facial pain in nerve damage (trigeminal neuralgia), pain in cancer or persistent spine pain
  • Surgery for movement disorders, eg Parkinson's disease
  • Surgery for malformations of the brain and spinal cord
  • Surgery for cerebrovascular diseases, eg. Vascular glands (aneurysm) or vascular tumors of the arteries or veins
  • Surgery for brain tumors
  • Surgery for spinal cord tumors
  • Surgery and intensive care treatment of traumatic brain injury
  • Surgery to correct malformations of the skull
