The Department of General Pediatrics, Neonatology and Pediatric Cardiology covers a broad range of services in the treatment of general pediatric diseases. Children and adolescents of all ages up to the age of 18 are treated at the department. The main focuses of the clinic include Metabolism, Neuropediatrics, Gastroenterology, Infectiology, Pulmonology, Cardiology, and Neonatology. The clinic also has special experience in the care of children with diabetes mellitus, hormonal and allergological diseases.
The department’s intensive care unit is equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology. They treat mainly premature births, newborns, and also older children with acute, life-threatening disease symptoms. The department treats about 200 cases of low birth weights, 122 cases of type I diabetes in children and teenagers and over 500 cases of different infections. For the intensive care of premature and newborns, a separate neonatological ward is also available. Neonatology cooperates closely with the obstetricians of the University Gynecological department.
The clinic offers a wide range of special outpatient clinics (including metabolism, neurology, endocrinology, gastroenterology and a diabetes outpatient clinic recognized by the German Diabetes Association and a seizure outpatient clinic, certified by the German Society for Epileptology). The epilepsy unit treats about 177 cases per year. In addition, there is a competent team that handles different questions of infectious diseases in infants and adolescents.
The department also offers a wide range of diagnostic examinations (e.g. EEG and electrophysiological examinations). Also integrated is a metabolic lab that has a wide range of modern methods for diagnosis and therapy control of congenital metabolic disorders. Further examinations such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance tomography, and gastroenterological endoscopy are sometimes carried out directly in the pediatric clinic.
