Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Infectiology

The University Hospital Düsseldorf’s Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Infectiology offers a wide range of services including the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the liver, gastrointestinal tract, and pancreas. The department also has specialists for the treatment of gastrointestinal tumors (esophagus, stomach, intestine and pancreas, liver. The department has a certified intestinal care unit. High-tech endoscopy, (contrast media) sonography and sonographically-controlled punctures are among the core competencies. In addition, all common procedures to formulate a diagnosis of gastroenterological diseases, like functional diagnostics (respiratory tests, pH-metres, manometries of the esophagus and the rectum), are performed at the department. The department is also a regional center for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic liver diseases and their complications.

In addition, the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Infectiology is certified by the Center for Infectious Diseases. All forms of hepatitis, HIV infections, and tropical infectious diseases are treated here.

The department has more than 10 special outpatient clinics. Patients with various diseases of the esophagus, stomach, intestine, bile, pancreas or liver are treated at the general gastroenterological outpatient clinic. The hepatitis outpatient department is the national contact point for patients with chronic hepatitis B, C, and D. More than 1000 patients are advised and cared at the hepatitis unit every year.  While the cure rate was just 10% in the early 1990s, recently they have a cure rate of 50% to 70%.

The liver transplant unit performs more than 200 transplants and provides extensive care to the patients who have just undergone a liver transplant every year.

Another focus of the clinic is the tropical medicine. This is an important point of contact in the region for tropical diseases, vaccinations, travel advice, and tropical studies. This service is useful for public health and multinationals who transact business in the tropical regions.

The department is equipped with all modern diagnostic and therapeutic options.
