Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology at University Hospital Bergmannsheil Bochum provides surgical care for patients with musculoskeletal diseases and injuries. It has an emergency unit which was the first established specialized emergency hospital in the world and over the years, it has developed as a state-of-the-art facility with all the new therapeutic and surgical measures.
The department offers its service on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. It has a national trauma center that is certified by the Trauma Network Ruhr and is one of the largest organizations of its kind in Germany. There are 2 specifically equipped helicopters at the department which are available for the rapid transport of critical condition patients.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Thomas Armin Schildhauer, the department of Orthopedics and Traumatology at University Hospital Bergmannsheil Bochum performs over 3,000 operations every year.  It also consists of a specialized unit for the treatment of spinal cord injuries along with a great team of surgeons for complex spinal surgeries.
