Department of Gastroenterology, Gastrointestinal Oncology, Nutritional Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Rheumatology and Immunology
Department of Gastroenterology, Gastrointestinal Oncology, Nutritional Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Rheumatology, and Immunology at University Hospital Augsburg provides care for patients with diseases of the stomach, intestines, liver, biliary system, and the pancreas as well as infectious, rheumatological, immunological, and nutritional disorders. The department has achieved excellent success in the early detection of tumors in their preliminary stages through the use of endoscopic methods. As an ultra-modern center, the clinic, along with the Department of Pulmonology, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Pediatrics and Adolescence Medicine, is a part of the Endoscopic Center that performs over 15,000 endoscopic examinations every year.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Helmut Messmann, the clinic is involved with the Colon Cancer Center and follows the guidelines of the German Society of Digestive and Metabolic Diseases and the German Society of Nutritional Medicine. The focus of the Rheumatology and Immunology unit is the treatment of inflammatory and immunologically mediated diseases of the musculoskeletal system and the internal organs for both inpatients and outpatients. The research unit of the department participates in national and international studies on new therapies that are carried out by the gastrointestinal tumor group in the Working Group on Internal Oncology (AIO).
