The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery forms the link between medical, surgical and dental activities. With the knowledge of human medicine and dentistry the activities of the department range from the treatment of traumatic injuries of the jaw and facial skull with the covering soft tissues to all tumor diseases of the oral cavity, face and surrounding structures. Another focal point of the department is the interdisciplinary treatment of facial malformations, such as the cleft lip and palate, as well as congenital or acquired anomalies of the jaws, which are treated together with colleagues in orthodontics and phoniatric and pediatric audiology. Especially for older patients or so-called risk patients with severe concomitant diseases, the department offers state-of-the-art treatment methods in the field of dental implantology and jaw bone reconstruction. A new focus of activity is the surgical treatment of diseases of the temporomandibular joint, which are increasing in the aging society more and more. Under the guidance of Univ. Prof. Dr. Robert Sader more than 1,500 inpatients are treated at the department annually.
