Department of Ophthalmology

Department of Ophthalmology at University Hospital Bonn offers medical care for patients suffering from all kinds of diseases of the eye. The department is in possession of the state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment as well as resources for conservative and surgical treatments. Common diseases that affect the vision are given extreme attention and handled with optimal care such as macular degeneration and retinal diseases. 
The department has qualified eye surgeons who provide high-quality surgical treatment using cutting-edge equipment. Their most famous operations are corneal transplantation, cataract and glaucoma surgeries. More than 1,000 operations for vitrectomy and 700 extracapsular lens extraction procedures are performed every year and more than 3,000 inpatients are treated annually in this department under the guidance of Univ. Prof. Dr. med. Frank G. Holz.
One of the most extraordinary features of this department is its Laser Surgery Center. Therapeutic surgeries with advanced laser techniques for complex diseases as retinal detachment and complicated cataract are successfully performed every year. For newborns with retinal diseases, special operative and post-operative care are given.
