Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Nephrology, Infectiology, Endocrinology, and Diabetology at University Hospital Bonn provides care for patients suffering from diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract, liver, biliary tract, pancreas, endocrine glands, and kidney as well as infectious diseases including HIV and AIDS. The department is a part of the Liver Organ Commission of the German Transplantation Society for its liver transplantation efforts.
A special interest of the department is transplantation surgeries. The department has a transplantation unit which is in cooperation with the Surgical Clinic of the University Hospital Bonn. The department is a part of the Liver Organ Commission of the German Transplantation Society for its liver transplantation efforts. It’s also in cooperation with the Department of Urology and Surgical Center for transplantations of kidneys and combined kidney and pancreas transplants. The department directs significant interests towards thyroid disorders and that’s why it’s in cooperation with the Department of Nuclear Medicine.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Christian Strassburg, the department treats more than 3,500 inpatients every year. The department has research activities, especially to study HIV, liver diseases, portal, and splanchnic hemodynamics.
