Department of Cardiology, Angiology, Pulmonology and Intensive Care Medicine at University Hospital Bonn provides the medical care needed by patients with diseases of the heart, lungs and blood vessels as well as life-threatening conditions. The department consists of 110 beds, 5 cath labs, 1 hybrid surgery unit and another for intensive care services.
The department is in cooperation with the departments of Cardiac Surgery, Internal Medicine Anesthetics, Neurology and Pediatric Cardiology, all to ensure that the patients get an optimal management plan designed specifically for them. Because of that, the department has impressive records in treating congenital and acquired valve defects, rhythm disorders and occluded peripheral blood vessels.
As for the pulmonological part of the department, collaborations with the Departments of Thoracic Surgery, Radiology, Oncology and Radiation Therapy was made to improve the diagnosis and therapy offered for patients with lung tumors, obstructive and restrictive diseases of the lung.
With Prof. Dr. med. Georg Nickenig as the head of the department, nearly 6,000 inpatients are treated there every year by the qualified medical staff. The department also has clinical studies activities for enhancing the equipment and techniques used for diagnosis and treatment as well as understanding the pathogenesis of diseases to manage them better. The main focuses are coronary heart disease, arrhythmia, aortic, mitral and tricuspid valve diseases.
