Department of Ophthalmology

Department of Ophthalmology at University Hospital Stuttgart is located at the Catherine facility where it offers the maximum care for patients with diseases of the eye and orbit. Being one of the largest and most advanced ophthalmology clinics of southern Germany, the facility is ready around the clock for emergencies and injuries and treats over 3,400 inpatients every year. The department has many special outpatient clinics such as clinics for glaucoma consultation, retinal consultation, refractive consultation, consultation for degenerative retinal diseases as well as the vision school. The medical team has achieved impressive results in the fields of cataract, glaucoma, corneal diseases, eye trauma, uveitis, retinal diseases, and neuro-ophthalmology.
Under the management of Prof. Dr. Florian Gekeler, the department is in collaboration with the German Society for Tissue Transplantation (DGFG) as the seat of a tissue donation coordinator for corneal tissue donation. The clinic also works in cooperation with the Trauma Center in special therapy rooms equipped with the latest medical technology as well as an interdisciplinary team of surgeons to ensure optimal care for patients with severe injuries.
