Department of Ophthalmology at University Hospital Mannheim provides conservative and surgical care for patients with diseases of the eye and orbit. The department offers the full range of cutting-edge diagnostics and therapeutics for the management of various ocular diseases and has its main focus directed towards glaucoma, corneal diseases, cataract, retinopathy of prematurity as well as surgical ophthalmology in vitreoretinal diseases.
The department consists of one station made of 14 beds where over 1,330 inpatients are treated every year under the supervision of Prof. Dr. med. Frank Schlichtenbrede. The department has its own Laser Center which was established in 1993, making it the first LASIK Center in Germany. The Laser Center of Mannheim has been recognized by FOCUS Magazine as one of the best facilities of its kind. The center offers the full spectrum of laser surgeries such as SMILE, Femto-LASIK, Smart Surf, and many others. It also offers artificial lenses for phakic eyes and presbyopia correction.
