Department of Neurosurgery at University Hospital Mannheim provides surgical care for patients with acute and chronic diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems. The department is one of the largest centers of its kind in Germany as it offers its service on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. The department is in constant development with the help of the Center for Translational Neuroscience and has its main focus directed towards vascular neurosurgery, neuro-oncology, pediatric neurosurgery, skull base surgery as well as spine surgery. The department is fully equipped with the latest surgical techniques and equipment to ensure patients get optimal care.
The department has general wards composed of 52 beds where over 1,700 inpatients are treated every year, most of which require spine surgery. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Daniel Hänggi and works in cooperation with the departments of Neuroradiology, Neurology, Oncology, Radiotherapy as well as Internal Medicine divisions. The department also consists of a day outpatient clinic where more than 2,500 patients with complex diseases are treated each year.
