Department of General Surgery

Department of General Surgery at University Hospital Mannheim provides surgical care for patients with diseases of abdominal and thoracic organs as well as major blood vessels. The department is composed of 5 stations: a general surgery station, thoracic surgery station, abdominal surgery station, vascular surgery station, and an intermediate care unit. The department is certified by the German Cancer Society as a part of the Colorectal Cancer Center Mannheim, Thorax Cancer Mannheim as well as Pancreatic and Liver Center. The department offers transplantation surgeries as it is a significant part of the Transplant Center Mannheim where kidney transplant surgery is performed through keyhole surgery by specially trained transplant surgeons.
The department consists of 119 beds where over 4,200 inpatients are treated every year under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Christoph Reißfelder. The department is supplied with the cutting-edge surgical equipment and the latest surgical techniques, all in means to provide the optimal care to the patients. The department is also known for its great medical staff which is composed of 46 doctors, 32 of them are specialists.
