Department of Pulmonology

Department of Pneumology at University Hospital Magdeburg provides care for patients with acute and chronic diseases of the lungs. The department offers the latest, state-of-the-art diagnostics and therapeutics on both an inpatient and outpatient basis by the great medical team of qualified, experienced doctors and well-trained nursing staff. The staff works in close cooperation with other departments of the Internal Medicine Center and various departments of the University Hospital, such as the Departments of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Therapeutic and Interventional Radiology, and Otolaryngology, to ensure specialists' care for every step of the management plan.
Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. med. Jens Schreiber, the medical team treats over 1,700 patients every year and has achieved excellent results in the field of lung cancer. The facility follows the latest therapeutic standards for lung cancer for over 230 patients annually. The German Society of Sleep Medicine has certified the sleep laboratory unit where sleep disorders caused by respiratory conditions are monitored and treated.

Prof. Dr. med. Jens Schreiber, born in Halle / Saale in 1960, completed his medical studies at the medical faculty of the State Medical Academy in Kalinin (today: Tver) in the former Soviet Union. In 1985 he began his specialist training in internal medicine at the Research Institute for Lung Diseases and Tuberculosis, Berlin-Buch. In 1987 he completed his doctorate with studies on the importance of neuropeptides in obstructive airways diseases. He then worked as an assistant doctor/research assistant in the medical clinic at the Borstel research center.

In the following years, he was awarded the sub-area recognition for "Pneumology" and the additional designations for "Allergology", "Environmental Medicine" and "Sleep Medicine". Further qualifications followed in the areas of chest X-ray diagnostics and laser applications in medicine. In 2004, Prof. Dr. Schreiber at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg with studies the importance of adhesion molecules in obstructive respiratory diseases. Before starting work at the Magdeburg University Hospital, he had been Head of the Pneumology Department in the Internal Medicine Clinic of the Dessau Municipal Hospital since 1997.

Prof. Schreiber is chairman of the specialist and examination committee "Pneumology" of the state of Saxony-Anhalt and co-editor of several specialist journals. In October 2009 he was granted the right to use the designation “extraordinary professor” by the minister of culture of Saxony-Anhalt. On January 1, 2016, he accepted the offer of the W3 endowed professorship for pneumology.
