Prof. Dr. Manfred Infanger

Department of Plastic, Aesthetic and Hand Surgery

Department of Plastic, Aesthetic, and Hand Surgery at the University Hospital Magdeburg offers the full range of modern plastic and aesthetic surgery, reconstructive surgery, hand surgery as well as surgical treatment of burns for patients with severe injuries and deformities. The department has been an independent center since 1994, and it was the first university department to land a chair in the new federal states. The Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand (FESSH) has certified the facility as a Hand Trauma Center in 2011.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Manfred Infanger, the medical team treats over 900 inpatients every year with specialists of other clinics in the Center for Interdisciplinary Reconstructive Plastic Surgery. The staff also offers special consultations for chest deformities, breasts, laser treatment as well as wrinkle therapy.
The Department of Plastic, Aesthetic, and Hand Surgery at the University Hospital Magdeburg is specialized in:

  • Skin and soft tissue reconstruction
  • Nerve transplantation
  • Spare sculptures
  • Treatment of injuries to the brachial plexus
  • Treatment of acute hand injuries
  • Secondary reconstructions of the hand
  • Eyelid surgery
  • Wrinkle treatment
  • Chemical peeling skin rejuvenation
  • Face lift
  • Neck lift
  • Scar revision
  • Breast augmentation
  • Breast reduction
  • Breast lift
  • Liposuction
  • Age spots
  • Hair removal
  • Tummy tuck
  • Body lift

Prof. Dr. med. Manfred Infanger, born in 1963, is a specialist in hand surgery as well as plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. Born in Zurich, he studied human medicine in his hometown and, after passing his state examination, gained experience in all surgical subjects at the University Hospital Zurich, before finally deciding to train at the clinic for hand, plastic and reconstructive surgery, including burn surgery. Professional training took place in Great Britain at the University of Glasgow, at the University of Taipei in China, and several times in the USA, e.g. at the Mayo Clinic Rochester and at the John Hopkins University in Baltimore. He also took part in several relief missions as a plastic surgeon in developing countries, for example in Bolivia.

Five years after the state examination, Prof. Infanger was appointed senior physician in Zurich and worked in various fields (hand surgery, plastic and burn surgery, intensive care medicine). When he moved to the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin in 2001, he was appointed head of hand, plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. At the Charité Breast Center, he was also responsible for plastic-reconstructive surgical care. In 2007, Prof. Infanger completed his habilitation and received the Venia Legendi at the Charité for plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery.

Thanks to his many years of medical work, Prof. Infanger can refer to extensive clinical experience in all of his specialist areas. The focus here is on hand surgery for severe injuries, congenital malformations or changes in limbs due to polyarthritis. The focus is on his plastic-reconstructive field of activity on the whole body after accidents, tumors, diseases and burns. This includes microsurgical reconstructions through the transplantation of tissue to cover defects or the replantation of severed tissue parts after accidents. Through the interdisciplinary cooperation with trauma and visceral surgeons (defect cover, plexus surgery), orthopedic surgeons (tissue replacement), gynecologists (reconstruction of the breast, genital tract, sex change), etc.

His 47-year-old's academic work spans a broad spectrum. This essentially includes regenerative medicine, especially tissue engineering (space life medicine), where tissue is grown in the context of artificial (RPM machine) and real weightlessness (parabolic flights, rocket flights, international space station, ISS) and the behavior of Tumor cells is examined. Further focal points are the research of peripheral nerve regeneration and molecular biological mechanisms in mechanical and inflammatory vascular trauma.

In his new area of ??activity, Prof. Infanger would like to continue this focus in cooperation with the Magdeburg scientists on the one hand in the context of space research and on the other hand in the molecular biological investigation of apoptosis in tumor cells and cytoprotection by growth factors in the context of tissue engineering. For this purpose, an RPM machine and a bioreactor to generate artificial weightlessness are also being installed in Magdeburg.
