Department of General, Visceral, Vascular, and Transplant Surgery at University Hospital Magdeburg provides surgical care for patients with diseases of the digestive tract and abdominal organs. The facility is certified by the German Cancer Society for the treatment of colon and pancreatic cancer and also recognized by FOCUS Magazine as one of the best medical facilities in Germany in its field. The German Society for General and Visceral Surgery (DGAV) has certified the Obesity Center for its efforts and success in the management of obesity. The department offers the full range of general surgery, including tumor surgery, organ transplantation, endocrine surgery, and bariatric surgery as it works cooperation with the Departments of Internal Medicine, Diagnostic Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Otolaryngology, Radiation Oncology, Vascular Surgery, and Pediatric Surgery to cover the entire spectrum of surgical procedures for all age groups.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Roland S. Croner, the medical team treats over 2,000 inpatients every year, many of which need an appendectomy. The research unit is involved in many research projects with national and international organizations in hopes of developing better surgical technology and gaining a better understanding of pathologies.

Professor Dr. med. Roland S. Croner, MA, worked at the Heidelberg University Hospital from 1998 to 2001 until he moved to Magdeburg in April of last year and then at the Erlangen University Hospital, most recently as Senior Consultant at the Surgical Clinic and head of the liver and pancreas transplant program. His surgical training took him to leading centers in the USA, Japan, and Korea as well as in several European countries. In addition to several additional qualifications, such as emergency medical services, emergency medicine, and other specializations, he completed a master’s degree (MA) in “Management of hospital and social facilities”.

In the area of patient care, the clinic director's claim that every patient should receive the best possible individual therapy using the most modern surgical procedures that guarantee excellent surgical and oncological quality, but minimize surgical trauma.

Prof. Croner's scientific focus is on the development of individual surgical therapies within the framework of multimodal, interdisciplinary treatment concepts for cancer patients. This includes investigations of molecular signatures in tumor tissue and blood in order to assess the aggressiveness of tumors, which is of great benefit for the individualization of therapy.
