Head of the Department
Prof. Dr. Jochen Weigt
Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Infectious Diseases
Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Infectious Diseases at University Hospital Magdeburg provides care for patients with diseases of the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, and pancreas. The department is in close cooperation with other internal medicine departments as well as the Departments of General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery, Radiology, and Pathology to ensure optimal care for patients in the general wards and the operating theaters. The endoscopy unit has an excellent reputation for offering the entire spectrum of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic measures.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Jochen Weigt, the medical team treats over 1,600 inpatients every year, preferably through non-invasive methods like ultrasonography. The Ultrasonography Unit provides all diagnostic and interventional sonographic studies for both inpatients and outpatients. The research unit has many research projects running that mainly focus on biomarkers for liver tumors and pancreatic cancer as well as carcinogenesis of cancer in digestive cancer.

Prof. Dr. med. Jochen Weigt is acting director of the university clinic for gastroenterology, hepatology, and infectious diseases. His medical career began with his medical studies at the local Otto von Guericke University. The specialist for internal medicine and gastroenterology has been working at the University Medicine in Magdeburg (UMMD) since 2003.
Gastroenterologist Prof. Dr. Jochen Weigt from the University Medical Center Magdeburg uses the artificial intelligence CAD EYE for his research. In a current project, Prof. Weigt is working on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in endoscopy. "AI offers us new opportunities to further improve diagnostics," says the expert. For this purpose, together with other European scientists, in close collaboration with the Fujifilm company, he has developed a polyp detection and characterization tool. "With the help of several neural networks of an artificial intelligence, it is possible to increase the number of polyps, that can be found during a colonoscopy, ”explains Prof. Weigt. In addition, the system is able to characterize the findings and it can make a reliable prediction of the histology. The system is to be further tested in clinical studies.
In order to promote the next generation of gastroenterology and to inspire young medical professionals for this subject, Prof. Weigt uses contemporary methods on a mix of theoretical basic knowledge and the learning of practical skills on simulators and training equipment.
