University Hospital Magdeburg

Head of the Department
Prof. Dr. Jens Wippermann
Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery
Department of Cardiothoracic iatric Surgery at University Hospital Magdeburg is composed of two units that provide surgical care for patients with heart, thoracic cavity, and lung diseases. Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Jens Wippermann, the staff treats over 1,240 inpatients every year in both stations.
The cardiac surgery unit has the innovative, most advanced diagnostics and surgical equipment for the specialized medical team to perform minimally invasive procedures as well as open surgery. The department is known for its success in the fields of arterial coronary bypass surgery, interventional cardiac valve surgery, and implantation of ventricular assist devices. The unit consists of general wards with 36 beds, an intensive care station with 11 beds, and operating theaters where experienced surgeons perform 1,800 surgical interventions annually, 1,100 of which require cardiopulmonary bypass. The thoracic surgery unit is mainly concerned with the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases of the lungs, chest, mediastinum, and diaphragm, especially cancer of the chest through the DaVinci Surgical System with the Departments of General Surgery, Urology, and Gynecology.
The Department of Cardiothoracic iatric Surgery at University Hospital Magdeburg is specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of:
- Myocardial infarction
- Valvular stenosis
- Coronary heart disease
- Valvular insufficiency
- Atrial fibrillation
- Lung cancer
- Mediastinal tumors
- Tracheobronchial cancer
- Tracheal stenosis
- Congestive heart failure
- Aortic dissection
- Aneurysms
- Esophageal cancer
Prof. Dr. med. Jens Wippermann, born in 1964, began his professional career in 1994 at the Oldenburg City Clinics after studying medicine in Frankfurt / Main, Hanover, and Houston, USA. There he also completed his specialist training. From 2000 to 2005 he worked as a senior physician at the Jena University Hospital and then until his appointment at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg at the Cologne University Hospital. For his achievements, he was awarded the Rudolf Stich Prize of the German Society for Thoracic, Cardiac, and Vascular Surgery. In 2014 he was appointed adjunct professor.
Prof. Wippermann's clinical work covers the spectrum of all surgical procedures in adult cardiac surgery. This includes complete minimally invasive surgery with and without the use of the heart-lung machine, surgery of the aorta, heart/lung transplantation, and the implantation of artificial heart systems. He can already refer to around 7000 independently performed operations.
In order to find the right individual solution for each individual patient, Prof. Wippermann implements the concept of a “cardiac team” together with the cardiologists at the university clinic. This means that the decision for a certain procedure is always made jointly, i.e. in consultation between cardiologists and heart surgeons, so that heart patients benefit from modern, integrated therapy concepts.
In his scientific work, Prof. Wippermann focuses on minimally invasive surgical techniques. The development of biomaterials as possible vascular substitutes in bypass surgery is also a key focus. He has been carrying out these examinations for more than ten years together with other university institutions and other cooperation partners.
