Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at University Hospital Leipzig provides care for children and adolescents with congenital, acute and chronic acquired diseases. The department is divided into many specialized units and clinics. The endocrinology unit is a certified center for the diagnosis and treatment of pituitary gland, thyroid, adrenal, ovaries, parathyroid and testes diseases as well as bone metabolism disorders, It has the latest and the most advanced diagnostics such as hormone stimulation tests which are performed in the auxological day station. The department also has a diabetes unit where diabetes mellitus type 1 and 2 are treated and it is certified by the German Diabetes Society as it treats over 400 patients annually. The department also has a unit where diseases of the digestive system involving the esophagus, stomach, small intestines, large intestine, liver, and pancreas are managed.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Wieland Kieß, the department treats over 3,000 inpatients every year. The department is in close cooperation with the Department of Pediatric Surgery to provide patients with specialist care in each step of the management plan. The department has a special unit designed for those with congenital or acquired diseases of the kidney as well as rheumatic diseases affecting the kidney. The unit offers all types of renal replacement therapy, up to transplantation as per the guidelines of the Society of Pediatric Nephrology. The neurological unit of the department deals with all diseases of the nervous systems, a special focus is directed towards the treatment of epilepsy. The department of pediatric pulmonology and allergology involves the pediatric cystic fibrosis center which is a certified, specialized center for the management of cystic fibrosis. The department is also a part of the Leipzig interdisciplinary Center for Allergology (LICA) and the interdisciplinary Endoscopy Center.
