Department of Oncology, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Pneumology, Infectiology, and Nutritional Medicine at University Hospital Leipzig provides high-quality treatment for patients with gastrointestinal, pulmonological, hepatological and infectious diseases. The department is divided into 6 units and has its own inpatient and outpatient specialized units where patients receive optimal care for their diseased organ or system.
The oncological unit was founded in 2012 and is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Florian Lordick, whos is also the head of the whole department. The unit works in close cooperation with the University Cancer Center Leipzig where treatment for gastrointestinal malignancies is offered, particularly bile duct cancer, pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer, and hepatocellular carcinoma.
The hepatological unit under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Thomas Berg has great focus directed towards the early detection of liver diseases as it often doesn’t cause any pain. The unit aims to provide the latest therapeutic measures and the cutting-edge diagnostic methods hence, it conducts many national and international studies, especially in the field of hepatitis, fatty liver and liver cancer.
The Pulmonological unit is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Hubert Wirtz and treats nearly 2,000 inpatients every year in cooperation with the Departments of Internal Medicine.

The Infectiology unit is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Christoph Lübbert and in May 2019, the area of infectious and tropical medicine was successfully certified as the "Center for Infectious Diseases (DGI)" and thus received the coveted seal of quality from the German Society for Infectious Diseases (DGI). The unit confirms compliance with the highest quality standards in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with infectious diseases and works in the cooperation model with the Clinic for Infectious Diseases / Tropical Medicine, Nephrology and Rheumatology of the St. Georg Leipzig Clinic
The department also consists of a Nutritional unit which is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Albrecht Hoffmeister and aims to offer the patients optimal and individually tailored nutritional therapy. This includes nutritional advice, the use of high-calorie supplementary food as well as enteral and parenteral nutrition.
