Department of Neurosurgery

Department of Neurosurgery at University Hospital Leipzig provides surgical care for patients with diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems. The department has a special focus directed towards the tumors of the skull base such as pituitary tumors and acoustic neuroma as it is fully equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostics and therapeutics as well as the latest surgical techniques to treat such tumors.  The department also treats cerebrovascular diseases such as aneurysms and angiomas with the cooperation of the Departments of Neuroradiology and Interventional Radiology. The department of Neurosurgery is also certificated by the German Cancer Society as well as the DWG as a Spine Center due to its special feature of performing microsurgical suppurative interventions.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Jürgen Meixensberger, the department treats 1,400 inpatients every year. The department has a specialized unit for spinal neurosurgery where minimally invasive surgical procedures are performed for the treatment of birth defects, vascular and tumor diseases of the spinal cord and the spine. The department also offers treatment of neurodegenerative disorders and tremors.
