Department of Neonatology at University Hospital Leipzig provides conservative and surgical care for newborns with congenital and acquired diseases. The department is mainly concerned with sick newborns and premature babies and offers every child optimal care and treatment suitable for their condition. The department together with the Department of Obstetrics is considered as Perinatal Level I Center. It also works in cooperation with the Departments of Pediatric Surgery, Fetal Center, and the Heart Center Leipzig to offer individual treatment approach to each patient. The department also provides psychological support to children and parents which is an important aspect of the treatments.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Ulrich Thome, the department treats over 600 inpatients every year. The research unit of the department works towards improving the treatment and the outcome of interventions. The department constantly conducts clinical trials where new therapeutic measures are tested and organized. In the research laboratory, the mechanism by which diseases develop and are treated is also studied.
