Department of Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery at University Hospital Heidelberg provides surgical care for patients with musculoskeletal diseases and injuries. The department offers service at Campus Neuenhiemer Feld and Heidelberg-Schlierbach in the form of the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology and the Center for Orthopedics, Traumatology, and Paraplegiology, respectively. Both facilities offer their service in both an inpatient and outpatient basis for more than 6,500 patients every year. Working in cooperation with the Department of Anesthesiology and Surgical Clinic helps widen the spectrum of the musculoskeletal diseases treated by the department.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Volker Ewerbeck, the department is recognized as one of the best facilities in Germany in the field of endoprosthetic joint replacement, according to FOCUS Magazine. As a part of the German Research Foundation, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and the European Union, the research unit is working towards improving the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.
