Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Infectology at University Hospital Heidelberg provides care for patients with the gastrointestinal tract and liver diseases as well as infections. The department offers its state-of-the-art diagnostics and therapeutics on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Uta Merle, the department treats nearly 2,600 inpatients every year, more than 140 of which suffer from alcoholic liver disease.
Special features of the department are the management of gastrointestinal and liver neoplasms as well as liver transplantation. There are also specialized ambulances available and prepared for patients with hemochromatosis and Wilson's disease. As for patients with critical conditions, the intensive care unit is open all hours of the day.
