Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at University Hospital Essen provides care for patients with diseases of the heart and lungs requiring surgical interventions. The department consists of the West German Heart and Vascular Center Essen where more than 2,000 procedures are performed annually. Such a large number of surgeries are carried out due to the department’s experienced doctors and medical staff as well as state-of-the-art medical equipment in their 3 operating theatres. The department has a special feature which is Hybrid Space which allows both the cardiologist and the surgeon to work at the same time for the benefit of patients by reducing the time of treatment and providing the best recovery.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Arjang Ruhparwar, the department performs nearly 400 procedures of valvuloplasty for patients with valve insufficiency and valvular defects. It is also known for its history and success in fields of bypass surgery, rhythm surgery and thoracic organ transplantation with more than 100 patients on their waiting lists.
