Department of Pediatrics I (Neonatology, Pediatric Intensive Care and Neuropediatrics) at University Hospital Essen provides care for newborns in the first month of life suffering from any disorder either during the pregnancy or acquired during the delivery. This department is certified as a Perinatal Center by Ärztekammer Nordrhein and was also recognized as one of the best facilities in the field of neonatology. The department consists of 35 beds and mother and child rooms where, in cooperation with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, treats more than 1,800 inpatients every year. Prof. Dr. Med. Ursula Felderhoff-Müser and Prof. Dr. med Rainer Kimmig, as the directors of the Department of Pediatrics I and Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology respectively, are included in the Center for Monther and Child care at University Hospital Essen. The department has an intensive care unit where newborns with life-threatening conditions get the best possible management plans. The department has also been certified by the German Society for Muscular Dystrophy Association and the German Myasthenia Association.
