Department of Pediatrics II (Pediatric Nephrology, Gastroenterology and Endocrinology)

Department of Pediatrics II (Pediatric Nephrology, Gastroenterology, and Endocrinology) at University Hospital Essen provides care for children and adolescents suffering from diseases affecting their kidney, urinary system, gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, biliary tract, liver, and endocrinal glands as well as nutritional disorders.
The department is mainly divided into 3 clinics, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, and Endocrinology clinic. Each of previous clinics have a single unit for standard care where specialized doctors and medical staff tend to the needs of the patients. There is an intensive care unit for children after surgery or suffering from life-threatening conditions. The department treats more than 1,600 inpatients every year.
The nephrological department is the biggest Center of Pediatric Dialysis in Western Germany. The director of this department is Prof. Dr. med. Peter Friedrich Hoyer who is a chairman of the Board of the Society for Pediatric Nephrology.
The gastroenterological department directs a special focus towards neonatal cholestasis because early detection of cholestasis is the most effective method of prevention and control of cases. The endocrinal department has its biggest concern directed towards thyroid disorders, growth disorders, and diabetes mellitus.
