Department of Pediatrics III (Pediatric Oncology, Hematology, Pulmonology, Cardiology and Rheumatology) at University Hospital Essen is divided into 4 branches wherein each one, children and adolescents are treated with the special care and attention needed by the experienced specialized doctors and medical staff in these 4 units, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Dirk Reinhardt.
First, the department of pediatric onco-hematology. This part of the department is concerned with blood disorders and malignant diseases of children and adolescents. It has been recognized by the JAICE for their stem cell transplantation activities and by the German Cancer Society as Certified Children's Oncological Center. The department has also received certification as a European Cancer Center. More than 1,000 inpatients and 8,400 outpatients are treated by this department every year. A special feature of the department is its practice of stem cell transplantation. About 30 hematopoietic stem cell transplantations are performed every year.
Second, the department of pediatric cardiology. This clinic offers care for children and adolescents with all congenital and acquired diseases of the heart and the blood vessels. The early detection of heart defects starts from birth, with association with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. More than 400 inpatients are being treated every year. The department is also in cooperation with the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology for early detection and diagnosis of certain defects.
Third, the department of pediatric pulmonology. This unit of the department provides diagnosis and treatment of the full range of diseases of the upper respiratory tract, lungs and respiratory muscles in children and adolescents. The unit is registered at the Essen Center for Rare Diseases as a center for Cystic Fibrosis, Rare Lung Diseases and Chronic Respiratory Failure. More than 82 inpatients and 750 outpatients suffering from cystic fibrosis are treated there every year.
Fourth and lastly, the department of pediatric rheumatology. This part of the department has its focus on the diagnosis and treatment of childhood rheumatic disease (JIA) and the prevention of complications. The department works in close cooperation with the German Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Rheumatology as well as the German Rheumatism League. Help from specialized departments like ophthalmology is often needed and granted for these patients. This unit treats more than 1,000 patients every year.
