Department of Ophthalmology

Department of Ophthalmology at University Hospital Essen provides care for patients with eye infections, visual defects, opacities of eye surfaces, eye muscle strains and tumors of the eye. Many research activities are being conducted for retinoblastoma, uveal melanoma and genetic factors that predispose some eye diseases.
The department treats more than 4,200 inpatients annually, under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Med. Nikolaos E. Bechrakis. More than 1,000 patients with eye cancer and 500 patients suffering from glaucoma get treated every year in this department. The department has Eye Bank for both partial and complete transplantation of the eye.
