Department of Infectiology

Department of Infectiology at University Hospital Essen provides care for patients with infectious diseases. Immunocompromised patients are also treated in this department, whether the reason was organ transplantation, autoimmune disease or HIV infection. The West German Center for Infectious Diseases has recognized this department as a part of it. The research team in this department makes great contributions in the fields of T cell and B cell roles after organ transplantations as well as vaccination against pneumococci.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Oliver Witzke, more than 700 inpatients, and 3,400 outpatients are treated in this department by the experienced medical staff consisting of 8 physicians and 20 nurses. Most infections treated in this department are ones acquired after organ transplantation, they amount to 190 patients yearly.
