Department of Hematology and Oncology at University Hospital Essen provides care for patients with blood disorders and cancer as it is certified by the West Cancer Center Essen. The department approaches blood cancer with different treatment methods as surgical intervention, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunosuppression, and hormonal therapy. A special feature of the department is stem cell transplantation which approximately over 100 patients seek yearly.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Ulrich Dührsen, the department treats nearly 1,700 inpatients and 15,000 outpatients every year, 500 of which suffer from leukemia while 450 has non-Hodgkins lymphoma. The department performs at a certain excellence level due to the state-of-the-art equipment and medical staff of 35 nurses and 24 physicians, 13 of which are specialized in internal medicine and 10 are specialized in hematology and oncology. There are researches the department is currently conducting on acute and chronic leukemia, anemia, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas as well as coagulation disorders to enhance the outcome of the management plans applied.
