Department of General, Visceral and Transplantation Surgery at University Hospital Essen offers surgical intervention and post-surgical care for patients in need of general surgeries and organ transplantations. This department is one of the largest transplantation centers in Europe, specifically in kidney and liver transplantations.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Andreas Paul, the experienced, highly qualified doctors and medical staff perform more than 140 liver transplants and 135 kidney transplantation procedures every year. About 3,000 kidney and 1,8000 liver transplantations have been performed since their first transplantation surgery in 1972. The advanced equipment this department has helped in performing difficult gastrointestinal procedures. Nearly 340 operations on the esophagus, stomach, and intestine are performed annually.
The department performs minimally invasive interventions like laparoscopic resection of the colon, gall bladder, and anti-reflux surgery. The department also has a special focus directed towards endocrine glands surgeries, in cooperation with the Endocrinology department. The experienced medical team of this department, consisting of 40 doctors and 83 nurses, treats nearly 3,000 inpatients and more than 10,000 outpatients annually.
