Department of Rheumatology and Immunology

Department of Rheumatology and Immunology at University Hospital Erlangen provides care for patients with rheumatological and autoimmune diseases. The rheumatological unit has its main focuses targeting the bones, joints and musculoskeletal system as it is considered to be one of the few Center of Excellence for rheumatology and immunology. The department offers its service on both an inpatient and outpatient basis and according to the European League Against Rheumatism.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Georg Schett, the department treats over 800 inpatients every year. The department is also certified as a Center for Rare Immunological Diseases where patients of all ages who suffer from systemic autoimmune diseases, systemic vasculitis, autoimmune inflammatory disorders, and immunocompromised patients are cared for. The department is also certified by the German Society for Infectious Diseases.

The Department of Rheumatology and Immunology at University Hospital Erlangen is specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of:

Education and Professional Background

  • Study of Medicine at the University of Innsbruck, graduated in 1994.
  • 1994 - 1996 Postdoctoral research fellowship at the Institute for Biomedical Aging Research of the Austrian Academy of Science in Innsbruck.
  • 1996 - 2001 Training in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology at the Department of Internal Medicine III, University Hospital Vienna.
  • Since 2001 Board certification in Internal Medicine.
  • 2002 - 2003 Assistant Professor at the Medical University of Vienna.
  • Since 2003 Board certification in Rheumatology and Immunology.
  • 2003 Habilitation in Internal Medicine.
  • 2004 Research Fellow in Pharmaceutical Industry.
  • 2005 - 2006 Assistant Professor at the Medical University of Vienna.
  • Since 2006 Professor of Internal Medicine and Head of the Department of Adult and Pediatric Rheumatology, Immunology at the University Hospital Erlangen.

Projects and Other Activities

  • 2008 Initiated the IMMUNOBONE Priority Program funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), Germany.
  • Since 2015 Head of the Collaborative Research Centre in Erlangen of the German Research Foundation.
  • Coordinator of the METARTHROS Project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
