Department of Otolaryngology (ENT) at University Hospital Erlangen provides care for diseases of the ear, nose, and throat as well as neoplasms of the head and neck. The department is certified by the DIN EN ISO 9001:2008 and German Cancer Society and offers its service on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. It has 6 treatment units making it the largest clinic of its specialization in Germany. The department is equipped with the latest diagnostics and therapeutics as well as surgical equipment and consists of 80 beds, 6 operating theaters, and an intensive care unit composed of 5 beds for the treatment of different types of otolaryngological diseases especially malignancies of the head and neck.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Heinrich Iro, the department treats more than 5,300 inpatients and 39,700 outpatients every year about 700 of which require middle ear surgical interventions. The department is divided into many specialties such as Audiology, Vestibular Diagnostics, Neurophysiology, and Sleep Medicine, and has a special focus directed towards ear microsurgery. The department also possesses a pediatric otolaryngology unit where experts conduct diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for pediatric otolaryngological diseases.
