Department of Ophthalmology
Department of Ophthalmology at University Hospital Erlangen provides conservative and surgical care for patients with diseases of the eye and orbit. The department is equipped with the latest diagnostics and therapeutics for the management of simple and complex congenital and acquired eye diseases. The department offers the most advanced surgical techniques such as innovative laser approaches which reduce the risk of complications and improves the prognosis. The department is certified by FOCUS Magazine as well as the TÜV SÜD.
The department consists of 80 beds and 7 advanced operating theaters, one of which is for outpatient procedures, where 6,000 inpatients and 38,000 outpatients are treated every year under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Friedrich Kruse. The department has a corneal transplantation center where all types of keratoplasty are performed. The department offers the most advanced techniques for corneal transplantation and has had over 5,000 operations of these kinds so far. About 778 corneal transplants are performed every year making it a pioneer in the field of keratoplasty.
