Department of Neurosurgery

Department of Neurosurgery at University Hospital Erlangen provides surgical care for patients with acute and chronic diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems. It is one of the biggest facilities in Germany for its specialization. The department offers its service on both an inpatient and outpatient basis and performs over 2,500 surgical procedures annually. The department is in close cooperation with the Departments of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Neuropediatrics and Pediatric Oncology, for the purpose of the effective treatment of children and adolescents with neurological and neuro-oncological disorders.
The department consists of 64 beds in the general wards and 14 beds in the intensive care unit where over 2,200 inpatients and 5,500 outpatients are treated every year under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Michael Buchfelder.  The department has 4 state-of-the-art operating theaters that are fully equipped and prepared for complex surgical interventions. The department also has a successful outpatient clinic where consultations are offered as well as preoperative and postoperative care is provided.
