Department of Nephrology and Hypertensiology
Department of Nephrology and Hypertensiology at University Hospital Erlangen provides care for patients with congenital and acquired kidney diseases as well as renal-induced hypertension. The department is equipped with the cutting-edge diagnostics and therapeutics for early detection and management of the full range of renal diseases, it also offers all methods of kidney replacement therapy on both an outpatient and inpatient basis.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Mario Schiffer, the department treats more than 1,400 inpatients every year, over 150 of which suffer from chronic kidney failure. The department is known for its efforts and success in the field of treatment of acute and chronic kidney failure. The department works in close cooperation with the Transplant Center of Erlangen-Nuremberg as well as the Departments of Urology, General Surgery, and Vascular Surgery for kidney transplantation surgery. The department is also a certified Center for Rare Kidney diseases.
The Department of Nephrology and Hypertensiology at University Hospital Erlangen is specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of:

• Acute renal failure
• Chronic renal failure
• Arterial hypertension
• Polycystic kidney disease
• Chronic kidney disease
• Glomerulonephritis

- 1992 - 1999 Study of Human Medicine at the Free University of Berlin and King’s College, London.
- 1999 - 2000 Beginning of the internship in Internal Medicine, special focus on Nephrology and Hypertensiology, Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (Supervisor: Prof. Dr. med. med. R.B. Sterzel).
- 2000 - 2004 Research Fellow, Department of Nephrology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, (Head: Prof. Dr. med. E. Böttinger) New York.
- 2004 - 2008 Assistant Physician, Hannover Medical School, Department of Nephrology and Hypertensiology (Head: Prof. Dr. med. H. Haller).
- 2008 Board certification in Internal Medicine, habilitation in Internal Medicine, Senior Physician.
- Since 2011 W3 Professor with a focus on Nephrology and Transplantation Nephrology and Deputy Head of the department.
- Since 01.09.2018 Head of the Department of Nephrology and Hypertension at the University Hospital Erlangen.
