Department of Dermatology at University Hospital Erlangen provides conservative and surgical care for patients with skin diseases. The department is internationally recognized as a Center of High Competence and it directs a special focus towards the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases and tumors. The department has a Skin Cancer Center that is working in close cooperation with the center of gravity for tumor therapy in the region of North Bavaria.
The department has 46 beds where over 2,200 inpatients and 1,400 semi-patients are treated every year under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Gerold Schuler. The department also offers its service on an outpatient basis where it provides care for over 50,000 outpatients annually. The research unit of the department has about 182 workers, of which there are 39 doctors and 23 scientists. The main research projects are the biology of dendritic cells and vaccine development.
The Department of Dermatology at University Hospital Erlangen is specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of:

- 1977 - 1983 Medical Specialist training for skin and venereal diseases, University Hospital Innsbruck, Austria.
- 1983 - 1985 Research Fellow at the Rockefeller University, New York, USA.
- 1984 Habilitation.
- 1993 Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Experimental Dermatology of the University Hospital Innsbruck, Austria.
- Since 1995 Head of the Department of Dermatology at the University Hospital Erlangen.
