The clinical focus of the University Hospital Düsseldorf’s Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery includes kidney transplantation and minimally invasive and classic vascular surgery. The major focuses of the department include surgeries such as narrowing of the carotid arteries, enlargement of the main artery, correction of circulatory disorders in the pelvic and leg vessels, creation of AV shunts for dialysis patients and the treatment of varicose veins. The department is headed by Univ. Prof. Dr. med. Hubert Schelzig.

The services of the department include several sports training groups aimed at improving the conditions of the blood vessels which offer regular walking exercises for the treatment of circulatory disorders of the leg blood vessels.

The department also provides knowledge to future medical practitioners via modern concepts in teaching, which includes the training of medical students and the training of doctors. The continuous research in the development of medical methods for the well-being of patients is part of the activities of the department.

The main aim of the department is to be able to offer the patients quality and if possible, minimally invasive therapy options at the level of a university hospital.
