Department of Radiotherapy and Radio-oncology

The University Hospital Düsseldorf's Department of Radiotherapy and Radio-oncology is responsible for the treatment of cancerous diseases with the help of high-energy radiation that is applied externally (external beam radiotherapy) or internally (brachytherapy) to the tumor in order to destroy the cancer cells as much as possible.

The major focus of the department is external beam radiotherapy which includes multimodal treatment concepts for breast cancer, prostate cancer, tumors in the head and neck area, bronchial carcinomas, tumors of the abdomen and whole-body irradiation. Radiosurgery and intensity-modulated radiation therapy are among the most advanced radiotherapeutic methods and are used in complex anatomical conditions (e.g. in the brain, head and neck area or abdominal area). Brachytherapy, both alone and in addition to external beam radiotherapy, is used to treat gynecological, ENT, pulmonological, gastroenterological and soft tissue tumors. In addition to this, the specialist of the department treats leukemia and lymphoma in preparation for bone marrow transplantation.

The clinic is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and offers the entire spectrum of established radio-oncological therapeutic procedures. The therapeutic management of diseases is done by interdisciplinary teams of experts. The radiotherapist specifies an individual treatment plan for each patient and works closely with medical physicists. In this way, the treatment plans are constantly optimized and developed.
