University Hospital Düsseldorf

Head of the Department
Prof. Dr. Arndt Borkhardt
Department of Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Clinical Immunology
In the University Hospital Düsseldorf's Department of Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Clinical Immunology, all diseases of the hematopoietic system (anemias, leukemias, thrombocytopenia), cancers, coagulation disorders and diseases of the immunological-rheumatological group in each age group (infants, toddlers, adolescents) are diagnosed and treated. The department has state-of-the-art children's hospital with top-grade modern equipment and laboratory diagnostics. In addition to standardized, well-tested treatment approaches - in line with the recommendations of the specialist society - their therapy also includes innovative, experimental procedures for the most severe diseases. Some experimental procedures which include new innovative therapeutic approaches such as the tumor inoculation with dendritic cells are in the clinical trial phase.
Another focus of the department is the allogeneic blood stem cell transplantation (SZT, BMT station ), including haploidentical transplantation, in which parents act as stem cell donors for their ill child. Another focus of treatment in the outpatient area (hematological oncological outpatient clinic) is the diagnostic evaluation and treatment of bone marrow diseases like disorders in the formation or function of platelets or acute and chronic anemia. Children with congenital or acquired blood disorders are cared for in the coagulation outpatient clinic. They also have a specialized child palliative team that takes care of children and adolescents with incurable diseases. As much as possible, they try to take care of this group of children at home.
In the immunological/rheumatologic outpatient clinic, children and adolescents with congenital immune deficiencies are treated for various rheumatologic and autoinflammatory diseases. The clinic has an affiliated immunological laboratory with a variety of diagnostic methods which accurately detects the presence of an immunological condition (Jeffrey Model Center). In addition, there is a large pediatric outpatient clinic for children living with HIV / AIDS and special care for HIV-exposed children.
The Department of Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Clinical Immunology at the University Hospital Düsseldorf is specialized in:
- Allogeneic and autologous blood stem cell/bone marrow transplantation
- Immunotherapy with tumor vaccines and dendritic cells
- Therapy of solid tumors using regional deep hyperthermia
- Diagnosis and treatment of congenital and acquired diseases of the bone marrow
- Coagulation disorders
- HIV / AIDS and immune system disorders in children and adolescents
- Rheumatism and autoimmune diseases in children and adolescents
- Palliative Medicine
