Department of Nephrology

At the University Hospital Duesseldorf's Department of Nephrology, all acute and chronic kidney disease and all systemic diseases are treated with kidney involvement. The planning and preparation for a kidney transplant and its follow-up after successful kidney transplantation are the main focus of the clinic. The Nephrology department of the University Hospital Duesseldorf is a European Center of Excellence in the management of Hypertension. Their specialists are highly experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of primary, secondary and difficult-to-adjust arterial hypertension. The Department of Nephrology offers its patients and patients in other departments all types of diagnostics and treatments related to kidney diseases such as hemodialysis (blood washing), peritoneal dialysis and special procedures of blood plasma therapy (plasma exchange treatments, immunoadsorption, etc.).

In the field of treatment of patients with immunological and non-immunological systemic diseases, the clinic has developed into a supraregional center of excellence. Examples of this disease spectrum are vasculitis, i.e. immunologically mediated inflammation of small and medium blood vessels or amyloidosis, tissue damage that is characterized by the deposition of protein, especially in the kidney, but also in the heart and nerves. In addition, the clinic has supra-regional importance in the treatment of diabetic kidney disease.

A key task of the Department of Nephrology is the transplantation of kidneys.  The kidney transplant center is led by Professor Rump. The 2018 newly-refurbished transplant station in the MNR building has excellent facilities that facilitate the care of newly transplanted patients. Due to the many years of experience of specialized doctors from the participating clinics for nephrology, vascular surgery and urology, the Kidney Transplant Program Duesseldorf has been one of the largest in Germany for many years. The aftercare of kidney transplant patients is an important part of the department’s work. They also offer services in the prevention of kidney diseases and the management of chronic kidney diseases.
