Department of Hematology, Oncology and Clinical Immunology

The Department of Hematology, Oncology and Clinical Immunology helps people with blood disorders, cancers and immune system diseases. The department focuses on the treatment of malignant diseases of the blood, bone marrow and lymph nodes.

Both the therapy and the diagnosis of hematological diseases are done with high-quality technical equipment. The department maintains special laboratories for basic diagnostics and further investigation and investigation of hematological diseases. Other hospitals and medical practices in the region also make use of their labs for research. Classical techniques are used with Modern immunohistological and molecular biological examination technology to formulate the diagnosis of all diseases of the blood and bone marrow. The main focus of the specialists is the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic leukemia, myelodysplastic syndromes and lymphomas as well as multiple myeloma.

Their highly efficient diagnostics help in decision making for the best therapeutic approach which could be chemotherapy followed by autologous or allogeneic blood stem cell transplantation or other suitable methods. The department has many years of experience in the field of bone marrow and stem cell transplantation. In North Rhine-Westphalia, in the 1980s, it was the second clinic to offer this therapy in addition to the University Hospital Essen. Since 1989, more than 1,500 patients have undergone stem cell transplantation at the department. A special focus of this department is minimizing the risks and side effects of stem cell transplants.

Through research projects, many patients have the opportunity to participate early in innovative therapies.
