Department of Neurosurgery at University Hospital Augsburg, founded in 1982, has been providing surgical care for over 2,000 patients with central and peripheral neurological diseases as well as neuromuscular diseases. The priorities of the department, in terms of patient care and research activities, are the treatment of brain tumors, peripheral nerve pathologies, nerve compression syndromes, hydrocephalus as well as skull deformities. The clinic is fully equipped with the latest, advanced diagnostics, therapeutics as well as instruments that allow for computer-assisted surgical procedures such as neuronavigation, stereotactic surgery, and intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (iMRI). Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Volkmar Heidecke, the Pediatric Neurosurgery unit works closely with the Department of Pediatrics for the diagnosis and treatment of congenital malformations and developmental disorders of the central nervous system such as meningomyelocele.
