Department of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery

Department of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery at University Hospital Augsburg provides the surgical care required for congenital and acquired diseases of the thoracic organs. The Cardiac Surgery unit was founded in 1986 as a part of the establishment of comprehensive care for cardiac surgery in Germany and now is a pioneering, ultra-modern center with the latest, cutting-edge equipment that provides the full range of cardiac interventions. The cardiac surgeons perform over 1,900 operations every year, two-thirds of which require heart-lung machines. Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. med. Michael Beyer, the unit works in close cooperation with the Clinic for Cardiology, Pediatric Cardiology, and Cardio Anesthesia within the certified Heart Center Augsburg-Swabia.
The Thoracic Surgery unit is one of the largest clinics in Germany for the treatment of diseases of the lungs, chest wall, and mediastinum. The medical team has achieved excellent results in the fields of thoracic minimally invasive surgery and reconstructive procedures following accidents of surgical removal of tumors. In 2014, the unit worked together with the Departments of Pneumology, Oncology, and Radiation Therapy to establish the Lung Cancer Center which is now certified by the German Cancer Center and treats about 150 lung cancer patients annually.
